Volga

Despite its nickname « the little Mother Volga », it is the longest river in Europe (3350 km). It flows through big cities as Nizhny-Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Saratov, Volgograd (former Stalingrad, theatre of the famous battle) to achieve its slow journey in Astrakhan in the Caspian Sea.

Old trade waterway linking Caucasus and Asia to the Baltic countries and to Northern Europe, Volga keeps this role, presently coupled with a tourist one being criss-crossed by ship cruises from June to September.

As the national river, Volga has been immortalized in literature, painting, namely by the picture “The Boatmen” by Repin, and also by the famous “Volga Boatmen Song” on the same subject.
