Karelia

The Republic of Karelia, mainly inhabited by Slavs and endowed with the typical charm of northern landscapes, is located east of Finland and it is the birthplace of Kalevala, the traditional Finnish epic.

It is a scarcely populated region, covered with woods, swamps and lakes, two of which are the largest in Europe: Ladoga and Onega. Architecture plays a major role in its appeal, since Karelia is characterized by wooden constructions, among which the well-known churches of Kizhi Island, built without a single nail, which show the mastery of the local carpenters. A visit of the island, easily accessible by hydrofoil, is included in the program.

The capital is Petrozavodsk, whose name means “Peter’s factory”, because Peter the Great, the founder of Saint-Petersburg in 1703, established there in the same year a canons’ factory. Owing to its proximity to the Northern Venice, it will be possible for you to extend your trip and visit it. You will then have a chance to see the last rays of the white nights when the trip takes place in summer.
